Support for parents and carers
When a child or young person is struggling, it can be hard to know how best to help, and communication between you can become blocked. I offer support to parents and carers alongside my work with children and young people.
How parents and carers can be involved
Sometimes I meet with parents or carers as part of the work, or bring them into one or two sessions where that is helpful and agreed. This can help when communication has become blocked, or when a young person and parent are struggling to talk to each other. Parents want to help but are not sure how to do so in the most useful way. A young person might want to protect their parents from how bad they are feeling, and may not know how to talk to them about what is happening.
Deciding together
Whether and how parents are involved is discussed after I have met the young person, and only with everyone’s agreement. The young person’s confidentiality remains important throughout.
